A bit about Dr. Max Liu:

Dr. Liu is a Member of Technical Staff at Anthropic, where he focuses on power and resource efficiency, optimization, and AI infrastructure systems designed to maximize token-per-watt. Prior to joining Anthropic, he spent over seven years at Amazon Web Services as a Principal Power Engineer.

His expertise lies at the intersection of power systems, control theory, optimization, machine learning, and data center energy modeling. His recent work centers on leveraging advanced analytics and machine learning to improve large-scale data center efficiency. He has led initiatives including the development of load modeling frameworks to optimize power utilization in energy-constrained regions, and the design of data center microgrid systems for deployment in regions with unreliable grid infrastructure.

Dr. Liu’s earlier research focused on secure control applications for cyber-physical power systems. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes Fellowship (2015, PI), the Best Paper Award at the North American Power Symposium (2016), the Siebel Energy Scholar Award (2017), and the Siebel Energy Institute Seed Grant (2018).

Beyond his engineering work, Dr. Liu is a professional figure skating coach and former ensemble skater, having performed internationally with production companies for over six years (2004–2010). He is also an avid traveler, having explored more than 80 countries, with a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and landscapes.
